The Age of the Universe

It is my contention that both the scientific community and the Bible believing (Jew and Christian) communities are correct in their assertions of the age of the universe.  The scientific community says that the age of the universe is somewhere between 12 to 18,000,000,000 years old; whereas, the biblical community gives estimations of some 6000 years or up to the few million years.  I firmly say that both groups are correct.

  1. How can this be true if the bible said it took 6 days?

  2. In the passage of Genesis chapter 1 and all throughout the Old Testament the word used for day is the Hebrew word “yom”. Genesis 1:15 says “yom” is the light portion of time. Not the 24 hour period we now call a day. It means a period of time. The light portion of a day as we know it varies in length depending on the time of year and how far we are offset from the equator. If you are on the pole itself it can be months long or likewise just a few minutes long. And more than that, the word “yom” is translated and used for many different periods of time in the Old Testament. Forty four times the NASB translation it is translated as the word time. This word is also translated as year some ten times; other English words to which it is translated are afternoon, age, all of the years, always, Chronicles, completely, continually, course of time, daily, amount, day, daylight, days, entire, eternity, evening, every day, forever, full-year, full years, future, later, life, lifetime, perpetually, today, whole, yearly, yesterday, and so on.

In Genesis chapter 1 we see a common used formula; period of time equals the later time minus earlier time. This formula is used to define all six days of creation; we see it in the form “and the evening and the morning was the day”. We see this use six times; but each day does not have to be the same period of time, they may be but they could be different periods of time as well.

    Day 1 = time 2 - time 1
    Day 2 = time 4 - time 3
    Day 3 = time 6 - time 5
    Day 4 = time 8 - time 7
    Day 5 = time 10 - time 9
    Day 6 = time 12 - time 11
This is simple math or science notation that we use all the time, delta t = t2 – t1.

Also note that the Sun and moon were not even created on until day four, so the word day in Genesis chapter 1 cannot refer to at day as we know it. But instead, it refers to simply a period of time. I will tell you another little secret; the word translated as earth in Genesis chapter 1 does not refer to the planet we are on, i.e. earth.
